At Clehonger Primary School, the safety and wellbeing of every child is our highest priority. You may hear the word “safeguarding” used in school, so we wanted to explain what it means and what we do to protect your children.
Safeguarding means keeping children safe and helping them to grow up healthy, happy, and protected from harm. This includes:
- Making sure children are safe in school
- Protecting them from abuse or neglect
- Supporting their physical and emotional wellbeing
- Teaching them how to stay safe, both in real life and online
Prevent Strategy
As part of Clehonger’s commitment to safeguarding and child protection we fully support the government’s Prevent Strategy.
The Prevent strategy is a government strategy designed to stop people becoming terrorists or supporting terrorism. It:
- responds to the ideological challenge we face from terrorism and aspects of extremism, and the threat we face from those who promote these views
- provides practical help to prevent people from being drawn into terrorism and ensure they are given appropriate advice and support
- works with a wide range of sectors (including education, criminal justice, faith, charities, online and health)

We take safeguarding very seriously and have clear systems in place, including:
- Trained staff: All staff receive regular safeguarding training so they know how to spot worries and what to do if they are concerned about a child.
- Designated safeguarding leads: We have trained staff who are responsible for overseeing safeguarding and making sure concerns are dealt with quickly and properly.
- Clear procedures: If a member of staff is worried about a child, they follow strict procedures to make sure the child gets the right help and support.
- Working with families and other professionals: When needed, we work with parents and outside agencies (such as health or social care) to make sure children are safe and supported.
- Teaching children about safety: We help children learn how to keep themselves safe, including online safety, understanding feelings, and knowing who they can talk to if they are worried.
- A safe school environment: We make sure our school site, routines, and policies are designed to keep children safe every day.
Safeguarding works best when school and families work together. If you ever have a concern about your child or another child, or if something is worrying you, please speak to us. No concern is too small.

There are many possible signs of abuse and neglect, ranging from physical injury to changes in appearance or behaviour. Alternatively, you may witness an incident or a child may tell you that he or she is being harmed. If you are worried, please report it. You could help to save a child’s life. Even if you don’t know them, or even their name. Safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility.
